urban teachers summer institute
It hasn’t been too long since my last post, but a lot has sure happened in the last few weeks.
Firstly, I started working!
I had my orientation for Urban Teachers Baltimore last week, and have now spent just under a week working at my clinical site, learning how to be an effective teacher.
Over the summer, I’m working with rising 6th and 7th graders, which so far has been a lot of fun. My school year placement is still TBA, but I’d like to stay with the same grades or maybe work in a high school.
Orientation was pretty exhausting, but it was also very enriching. The UT staff were VERY welcoming and so pumped for summer! I now have a mentor, a coach, and wonderful faculty I can count on.
And I met SO many amazing people who are also in my cohort.
I’m in the Secondary ELA group, which focuses on teaching around 6th-12th grades. There are only like 25 people in my classes, so I hope to get to know everyone pretty well over the next few years! We had a lot of icebreakers and interactive activities, plus I hosted a game night, so we’re already on the way to becoming a tight-knit group. One of the activities was a scavenger hunt, and I got to return to my fave place: Rawlings Conservatory.
My classes so far are amazing as well. My favourite by far is Foundations in Secondary Education, but I am also enjoying all of the others too. I can’t wait to dig deeper into the lessons and start applying them in the classroom.
Overall, my weekdays are pretty long now: I wake up around 7, go to my school from 8-12, quickly eat lunch, and then go to class from around 1-6. Some days, I have evening meetings that go until 8-8:30. Then, it’s time to do readings, work on assignments, prep for my classroom lessons, and sleep (hopefully) by 10:30-11.
Although the schedule is pretty busy, it actually isn’t as overwhelming as I thought it would be. I do miss sleeping in, but I still have the weekend for that.
Plus, in the fall, things should die down a bit and the schedule shouldn’t be as hectic.
This isn’t the longest blog post ever, but it briefly summarizes the past two weeks or so and outlines my general schedule for the summer.
After summer institute officially ends on August 9, Taylor and I will be visiting his parents in California for a week or so. And THEN, we’ll be heading down to LA for a few days too!
Stay tuned for a post about that at the end of August feat. lots of beach photos :)
